Ayubowan! This is likely the first greeting you’ll hear from your driver. It means “may you live a long life,” the traditional Sinhalese way of welcoming guests.
Your driver will assist with your luggage and transfer you to your accommodation in Negombo. You may spend the next two days relaxing at your oceanfront hotel. If you’re feeling up to it, your driver can take you in the evening for a peaceful boat ride through the Muturajawela Lagoon, where you can enjoy a beautiful sunset and spot colorful birds nesting among the mangroves—an experience especially enjoyable for young children.
Travel time from the airport to Negombo: approximately 30 minutes
Your driver will pick you up from your hotel and take you to your next destination, Sigiriya. Along the way, there is an opportunity to visit a family-run pottery workshop, where you can observe the traditional Sri Lankan method of making clay pots. If you don’t mind a little mess, your toddlers can even enjoy creating their own clay pots.
Lunch will be prepared by a local family in a small village, offering an authentic home-cooked experience. While the meal is being prepared, you may enjoy a relaxing catamaran ride on the nearby lake or take a bullock cart ride through the village.
Travel time from Negombo to Dambulla: approximately 4 hours
During his long exile caused by South Indian invasions, King Valagamba sought refuge in the caves near Dambulla. After regaining the throne 15 years later, he transformed these caves into what is now known as the Dambulla Cave Temple. You will have the opportunity to visit this sacred site, renowned for its ancient murals and impressive statues.
Later in the day, once the heat has eased, your driver will take you to Minneriya National Park, one of the best places in Sri Lanka to observe wild elephants. During the jeep safari, you may also encounter deer, purple-faced leaf monkeys, toque macaques, lesser adjutants, painted storks, spot-billed pelicans, crocodiles, and many other wildlife species.
Your driver will take you to the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, which served as the heart of King Kashyapa’s kingdom to Kandy. The fortress is renowned for its still-functioning water gardens, beautiful frescoes, impressive rock structures, and fortified walls, making it a true architectural marvel.
After visiting Sigiriya, you will continue to your next destination, Kandy. The evening is left unscheduled, giving you time to relax and unwind with your children.
Travel time from Sigiriya to Kandy: approximately 2.5 hours
Kandy was the last royal kingdom of Sri Lanka and remained historically significant even during the British colonial period. Today, the city is a lively commercial center filled with charming colonial architecture. It is also one of the best places in Sri Lanka for shopping, especially for traditional wood carvings, batik textiles, and gemstones.
During your stay, you may visit the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, two of Kandy’s most iconic attractions. Alternatively, you may choose to take a scenic excursion to Ramboda, where you can explore lush tea plantations and visit the beautiful Ramboda Waterfall.
If you were unable to visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic or the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens earlier, you may do so before continuing to Bentota for your beach stay.
Your toddlers are sure to enjoy their time on the golden sandy beach, building sandcastles, collecting seashells, and watching beautiful sunsets. Optional activities during your stay in Bentota include a visit to a turtle hatchery, a day tour of Galle Fort, and a boat ride along the Madu River.
