Overview

Alankuda Beach, located on the Kalpitiya Peninsula on Sri Lanka’s northwest coast, is a stunning seaside destination known for its natural beauty, marine life and wide range of water activities. The beach is about 2.5 to 3 hours’ drive from Colombo, making it a convenient getaway for tourists staying in the capital or nearby areas.

This pristine stretch of coastline is considered one of the best places in Sri Lanka for whale and dolphin watching, thanks to the continental shelf coming close to shore. Between November and April, pods of spinner dolphins, as well as occasional whales, can be seen playing and breaching near the boats.

Beyond wildlife encounters, Alankuda’s clear waters and vibrant marine environment make it ideal for snorkeling among beautiful corals, with reefs located within boat‑ride distance, offering glimpses of colourful fish and underwater scenery. The beach also supports a variety of water sports, including canoeing, sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, and kite surfing, giving visitors plenty of options for both thrill and relaxation.

Unlike more crowded coastal spots, Alankuda maintains a peaceful, off‑the‑beaten‑path vibe, with boutique resorts and cottages lining the shore, perfect for couples or travellers seeking a romantic or fun‑filled beach holiday. Whether you’re lounging by the sea, exploring the underwater world, or spotting dolphins at play, Alankuda Beach truly feels like a paradise along Sri Lanka’s west coast.
