Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1 – 2 – 3 – Airport → Hikkaduwa
Your Sri Lankan adventure begins with a relaxing stay on the picturesque Hikkaduwa Beach. Your driver will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel without delay.
While the initial beach stay is perfect for some rest after your journey, there are plenty of activities to enjoy in your first days. You can go snorkeling, swimming, or jet skiing on the beautiful Hikkaduwa Beach. Don’t miss a visit to the Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located just a short drive away.
Travel time from the airport to Hikkaduwa: approximately 2.5 hours
Day 4 – Hikkaduwa → Yala
After breakfast, you will check out from your hotel in Hikkaduwa and begin a scenic journey towards the wild heart of Sri Lanka. Leaving the golden beaches behind, the drive takes you through charming southern towns, lush countryside, and changing landscapes as you head towards Yala National Park, Sri Lanka’s most famous wildlife reserve.
Upon arrival, you will prepare for an exciting jeep safari in the afternoon. Yala is renowned for its rich biodiversity and is home to elephants, crocodiles, sloth bears, spotted deer, and a wide variety of birdlife. It is also one of the best places in the world to spot the elusive Sri Lankan leopard in its natural habitat.
As the sun begins to set, the safari offers unforgettable moments of wildlife sightings against dramatic landscapes. After the safari, you will check in to your hotel near Yala and enjoy a relaxing evening surrounded by nature, ending the day with a peaceful overnight stay close to the park.
Day 5 – 6 – Yala → Ella
On the morning of day 5, your driver will take your family to Ella, a charming village in the hill country known for its stunning hikes and breathtaking views. It’s a place where you could easily spend several days just soaking in the scenery.
There’s no fixed schedule in Ella, giving you the freedom to explore at your own pace. You may visit Little Adam’s Peak, Ella Rock, Ravana Waterfall, or the Nine Arch Bridge, or even enjoy a scenic train ride. Simply let your guide know your preferences, and he will arrange everything for you.
Travel time from Yala to Ella: approximately 3 hours
Day 7 – 8 – Ella → Gal Oya
On day 7, your journey continues to Gal Oya. Breathe in the fresh mountain air and take in the lush greenery and abundant wildlife. You can hop into a jeep for a safari in Gal Oya National Park or enjoy a boat ride on Senanayake Lake, where you can spot a variety of animals in their natural habitat.
Another unique experience in Gal Oya is meeting the indigenous Vadda community, offering a glimpse into their traditional way of life. This tranquil village is sure to charm your entire family.
Travel time from Ella to Gal Oya: approximately 4 hours
Day 9 -10 – 11 – 12 – Gal Oya → Pasikuda
Your driver will pick you up from your hotel and take you to Pasikuda, the destination for the second beach stay of your tour. This pristine coastline is perfect for relaxation, with calm waters that make it ideal for families.
You can enjoy swimming, snorkeling, or simply lounging by the sea. For the more adventurous, diving is also an option, offering a chance to explore the mysteries of the blue ocean. (The waters are generally very calm from May to October.)
Travel time from Gal Oya to Pasikuda: approximately 3.5 hours
Day 13 – Pasikudah → Matale
One of the best ways to truly experience a country is by meeting the locals. If your family is open to a change of pace, we can arrange a homestay in Matale for a night, offering a glimpse into authentic Sri Lankan life.
Upon arrival, you can participate in daily activities such as visiting the farm, shopping at the local market, and preparing dinner alongside your hosts—an unforgettable cultural experience for the whole family.
Travel time from Pasikuda to Matale: approximately 3.5 hours
Day 14 – 15 – Matale → Negombo
For the final two nights in Sri Lanka, your driver will take you to Negombo, a charming fishing village near Colombo Airport. You can choose to relax at your beachfront hotel or explore the area with a few optional excursions.
Activities include a boat safari in the Muthurajawela Lagoon, a visit to the Negombo Fish Market, or a drive into Colombo for a city tour and some shopping—perfect ways to end your adventure on your own terms.
Travel time from Matale to Negombo: approximately 3.5 hours
Day 16 – Back to home
It’s the last day of your Sri Lanka family adventure. If time allows, you may spend the morning relaxing by the beautiful Negombo beach.
As all good things must come to an end, your driver will transfer you to the airport for your return flight. He will bid you farewell and drive back to Colombo. If you appreciated his service, a small tip would be greatly appreciated—it will surely make his day.
