Kandy, once known as Senkadagalapura, was the last capital of the Sinhala kings. This historic city is a treasure of Sri Lanka’s heritage, where the Dinahala culture thrived for over 2,500 years until British rule began in 1815. Today, Kandy is world-famous for the Temple of the Tooth Relic, which houses the sacred tooth of the Buddha—a must-visit site for pilgrims and travelers alike. UNESCO recognized its importance by declaring Kandy a World Heritage Site in 1988.
One of Kandy’s most spectacular events is the Esala Perahera, held annually in July or August. During this grand procession, one of the inner caskets protecting the Buddha’s tooth relic is carried through the streets atop a majestic royal elephant. The parade features traditional dancers, drummers, torch bearers, provincial flag bearers, and Nilames—lay custodians of temples—in colorful traditional attire. This vibrant festival attracts thousands of visitors, both locals and tourists, offering a truly unforgettable glimpse into Sri Lanka’s rich culture and traditions.
