Knuckles Mountain

Overview

The Knuckles Mountain Range is one of Sri Lanka’s most spectacular natural landscapes, located in the central part of the island across the Kandy and Matale districts. Its name comes from the series of rugged peaks that resemble the knuckles of a clenched fist when viewed from certain angles in the Kandy region — a name given by British surveyors, while locals historically called it Dumbara Kanduvetiya, meaning “mist‑laden mountain range.”

This mountain range is globally significant for its ecological diversity and conservation value, forming part of the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka UNESCO World Heritage Site. Despite covering less than 0.5 % of the country’s land area, the Knuckles forest supports an astonishing variety of life, including over 1,000 flowering plant species and a remarkable array of wildlife — from endemic birds and reptiles to mammals such as purple‑faced langurs and spotted deer. It’s also an important watershed area feeding major rivers.

The range’s terrain spans multiple micro‑climates, hosting lush montane cloud forests, tropical evergreen and semi‑evergreen forests, grasslands, and riverine valleys — a true microcosm of Sri Lanka’s climatic zones. This rich ecological tapestry makes Knuckles a biodiversity hotspot, with many endemic species of plants, birds, amphibians, and reptiles found nowhere else on Earth.

Today, Knuckles is a trekker’s and nature lover’s paradise, offering numerous scenic trails such as Mini World’s End, Dothalugala Nature Trail, Nitro Caves, and village paths leading to hidden waterfalls. The views of mist‑shrouded mountains, cascading streams, and verdant valleys are unforgettable experiences for outdoor enthusiasts.

Culturally, the Knuckles region is rich as well, with ancient villages like Meemure preserving traditional lifestyles and local folklore embedded in the hills and forests. Whether for hiking, birdwatching, photography, or simply soaking in nature’s grandeur, the Knuckles Mountain Range remains one of Sri Lanka’s most treasured and awe‑inspiring destinations.
