Kaudulla National Park is a renowned wildlife reserve in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, located about 190 km from Colombo and close to the historic sites of Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya. It was officially designated a national park in 2002, becoming one of the island’s newer protected areas with a focus on conserving its rich dry-zone ecosystems and the wildlife that depends on them.
The park centers around the ancient Kaudulla Tank, a reservoir originally constructed by King Mahasen and now a vital source of water that sustains wildlife throughout the dry months. Kaudulla is part of a larger elephant corridor connecting nearby reserves such as Minneriya, Hurulu Eco Park, and Somawathiya, which allows large herds of Sri Lankan elephants to migrate and graze in the area.
Kaudulla is especially famous for the elephant gatherings that occur during the dry season (typically August to December). At this time, hundreds of elephants — including playful calves, matriarchs, and large bulls — congregate around the reservoir to feed, drink, and bathe, creating one of the most spectacular wildlife spectacles in Sri Lanka.
Beyond elephants, the park supports a diverse range of wildlife. Visitors may see sambar deer, spotted deer, wild boar, water buffalo, and the occasional sloth bear or leopard, though the latter are rarely spotted. Kaudulla is also home to over 160 species of birds, including painted storks, pelicans, grey-headed fish eagles, and Asian spoonbills, making it a rewarding destination for both jeep safaris and birdwatching enthusiasts.
Kaudulla’s landscapes — a mix of grasslands, scrub forests, wetlands, and the expansive reservoir — create scenic backdrops for wildlife encounters and photography. The park’s location within Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle means it is often visited in combination with historical sites such as Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa, offering travelers a blend of natural wonders and cultural heritage in one region.
Whether you’re hoping to witness majestic elephant herds in their natural habitat or enjoy a quieter safari experience with abundant birdlife, Kaudulla National Park stands out as one of Sri Lanka’s most compelling wildlife destinations.
